Wood in the bathroom: why teak works, and what to look out for

Wood and water do not mix, many people think. Teak is the exception. How to use it in the bathroom.

A white bathroom with grey tiles can feel cold. Wood warms it up instantly, but most woods turn black or warp in a humid room. Not teak. It has been used on ships for centuries, and that is no coincidence.

Why teak can handle water

Teak naturally contains oil. That oil keeps water out, so the wood does not rot or go mouldy quickly. It can stand in the shower or across the bath.

Where to start?

  • A bath tray across the tub, with room for a book and a glass.
  • A stool or bench in the shower or next to the bath.
  • A small rack or soap dish by the sink.

Care

Over time teak turns silver-grey. If you like that, you do not need to do anything. If you want to keep the warm honey colour, treat it with teak oil once or twice a year.
