On a balcony of four square metres every centimetre is a choice. Most small balconies we see turn into storage for empty flowerpots and a bike in October. A shame, because with the right things you can sit out there well into autumn.

One good chair instead of a set

A bistro set with two little chairs is the standard, but who really sits on them for long? Choose one comfortable chair you can curl up in with a blanket, plus a small table that can take the rain.

Light without a socket

Most balconies have no socket. Lanterns with a candle or LED, and a rechargeable lamp, solve that. Put them on the floor and on the table, so you get light at two heights.

Greenery that survives winter

Use two or three large pots instead of ten small ones. Choose evergreens: box, lavender, ornamental grasses. They still look good in December.
