Light in layers: why every room needs three lamps (and none of them on the ceiling)
One ceiling light turns any room into a waiting room. With three lamps at different heights, your home changes after sunset.
When we walk into someone’s home and it feels cold, nine times out of ten it is the light. One lamp on the ceiling, full on, straight down. It turns any living room into a waiting room. The solution is not more expensive, just smarter: light in layers.
Three heights, three jobs
- Low: a table lamp on a sideboard, windowsill or side table. This is the mood light.
- Middle: a reading lamp or floor lamp next to the sofa or armchair. This is the task light.
- High: a pendant above the dining table, low enough that you do not look straight into the bulb.
With these three, you really only need the ceiling light in the living room to vacuum.
Choose warm white
Check the number of kelvin on the box. For the living room, around 2,200 to 2,700 kelvin is right. Anything above that soon feels like office light after sunset.

Material matters too
A lamp is an object in your room even when it is off. A travertine or marble base adds weight; a linen shade softens the light. Rattan and bamboo above the dining table cast lovely shadows on the wall. Do not choose everything the same: one stone lamp, one woven, one with fabric.
